After three
Premier League home games against Liverpool in a calendar year, Manchester
United's manager Erik ten Hag was defeated by three goals in Sunday's loss to
Liverpool, setting a new club record.
Under Arne
Slot, Luis Diaz scored twice for the visiting team before halftime. After the
interval, Mohamed Salah scored a third goal to guarantee that Liverpool would
enter the international break undefeated and without conceding a single goal.
United, on
the other hand, has lost twice in a row and is still in the bottom half. They
prevailed in their first match against Fulham, but before letting Liverpool
win, they lost in the last seconds at Brighton.

In Sunday's
setback to Liverpool, Manchester United's manager Erik ten Hag lost by three
goals, a club record after three home Premier League games in a calendar year
against Liverpool.
Ten Hag's
team finished 8th in the league the previous season despite losing 14 games,
six of which were at Old Trafford. However, Ten Hag has accomplished something
that no previous United manager in Premier League history has accomplished—he
has lost 3-0 at home three times in 12 months.
October 2023
saw the first of the three-goal defeats. The season's opening Manchester Derby
saw United lose three goals to Manchester City, with Erling Haaland scoring a
brace. The only saving grace for United was a goal from Hannibal Mejbri.
There was another 3-0 home loss six weeks later. With goals from Marcos Senesi, Philip Billing, and Dominic Solanke, Bournemouth prevailed this time. Dango Ouattara's late fourth goal was disallowed for a handball.
Arne Slot,
on the other hand, won his debut game against United and became the first
Liverpool manager in the history of the Premier League. He's the first to win
in their first league encounter with United since Bob Paisley in 1975 and the
first to triumph on their first league visit to Old Trafford since George Kay
in 1936.
Following
the defeat, Erik ten Hag expressed his frustrations.
"It's
not like I'm Harry Potter," Ten Hag remarked following the loss. "You
need to accept that.
It was the
first start of the season for three players.
"Manuel
Ugarte needs to improve his fitness because he did not play for one minute. The
next step is to integrate him into the group. He will undoubtedly benefit our
team. It can take up to two weeks or even a month. That holds true for many
athletes as well."
Before
United will resume Premier League action, they will have nearly a two-week
vacation. By then, deadline day acquisition Ugarte might be in the lineup.
Their next game will be away to Southampton, who was just promoted and is still
in the bottom three after losing at Brentford, making it three straight losses
in the league.
